Motion filed against Prez's request to expedite SC ruling

A motion has been filed in the Supreme Court today by a lawyer against the request made by President Maithripala Sirisena asking the Chief Justice to expedite the court ruling on the dissolution of parliament.

In his motion, the lawyer said such requests undermined the hearing of the case. Therefore, he requested the Supreme Court to issue a ruling after considering the motion.

Australian cricket star Usman Khawaja's brother arrested over 'terror hit list'

The brother of Australian international cricketer Usman Khawaja has been arrested as part of an investigation into a terror plot.

Meanwhile, New South Wales Police are preparing to charge Arsalan Khawaja over what they allege was a 'planned and calculated' attempt to frame a Sri Lankan student as a terrorist.

The 39-year-old will be charged with perverting the course of justice under Commonwealth legislation, as well as forgery under NSW law, after he was arrested in Parramatta this morning.

Special train service during school vacation will commence from December 7th

Two special train services will commence from December 7th in lieu of the school holidays.

An official from the Sri Lanka Railways said the train services will be operated from December 7 to January 6, next year.

The special train will leave Colombo to Badulla on December  at  7.30am. It is scheduled to reach Badulla at 5.00 p.m.

Another special train will leave from Badulla to Colombo Fort  at 9.30am. It will reach the Colombo Fort at 7.20pm.

SLFP ready to contest election under a common symbol

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party says that discussions will commence next week with regard to contesting the forthcoming general election under a common symbol.

 

It’s General Secretary Professor Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa said that they hope to gather all forces in order to defeat the common enemy.

 

Meanwhile, UPFA General Secretary Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said they hope to contest under the UPFA at the forthcoming election.

 

An officer of Pasgoda divisional secretariat killed in a shooting in Urubokka

An official attached to the Pasgoda Divisional Secretariat was killed when a shoot out took place along the road between Hulankanda and Dampahala in Urubokka this morning.

 

Police media spokesman office stated that the 44-year old victim of Walasmulla was riding a motorcycle at the time of the shooting carried out by another motorcyclist.

 

The motive of the killing is not known as yet and no suspect has been arrested so far.

Agreement signed to construct the façades of the twin towers, Ritz Carlton and JW Marriot

Under “The One Sri Lanka’ project” , an agreement was signed today to construct the façades of the twin towers, Ritz Carlton and JW Marriot.

 

The two buildings are currently under construction at Transwork Square in Colombo Fort.

 

The total cost of the facade construction is 70 million US dollars and the total stake of the entire project will be 560 million US Dollars.

 

4th victim of Dehiaththakandiya accident dies

The fourth member of the same family who met with an accident in Dehiattakandiya last afternoon had died of his injuries this morning.

 

Only the 35-year-old mother of the family escaped death.

 

However, her condition is also critical and is receiving treatment in the ICU at Polonnaruwa hospital.

 

The motorcycle ridden by the father, mother and three of their sons hit a tipper at Uttalapura on Sandunpura Lihiniyagama road in Dehiattakandiya last afternoon.
