Ten killed in head-on collision in Mahiyanganaya

Ten people were killed and two others injured when a van they were travelling in collided head-on with a bus, near the Mahiyanganaya National College early this morning.

Police said the bus which was travelling from Trincomalee to Diyathalawa on the Mahiyanganaya-Badulla Main Road, had collided head-on with the van at around 1.30 this morning.

They said the driver of the van and eleven others were admitted to the Mahiyanganaya Hospital and ten of them have succumbed to their injuries.

Police said four men, three women and three children were among the deceased.

Actor Rayan Van Rooyan and four others deported from Dubai

Five more individuals including actor Rayan Van Rooyan, who were arrested along with drug kingpin Makandure Madush, were deported from Dubai last night, Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera said.

He said the suspects arrived in the country at around 5.25 a.m today on the UL 226 flight. They were detained by the CID at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) for questioning, SP Gunasekera said.

Power crisis: Prez criticises PUCSL

President Maithripala Sirisena criticized the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) at yesterday's Cabinet meeting and stressed the need to sort out any misunderstanding the PUCSL had with the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).

The President told the Cabinet that two government institutions could not quarrel in this manner and even threatened not to attend Cabinet meetings hereafter unless the CEB and the PUCSL settled their issue.

Rs.25,000 fine for seven traffic offences: Gazette notice issued

The gazette notification on increasing fines in connection with seven traffic offences to Rs.25,000 has been issued, the Transport Ministry said.

According to the gazette notification, the ministry will present the new traffic fines to parliament after amending the Motor Traffic Act.

"Violation of traffic rules and careless driving by drivers has resulted in several road accidents in present. Therefore, the proposal to the increase of the minimum fine which was Rs.2,500 was proposed in 2017 due to the increase of the accidents," the ministry said.

Nearly 49 per cent of Colombo’s water wasted due to leakages

Nearly 49 per cent of water supplied to Colombo is lost due to leakages in the distribution pipe system, incurring a considerable loss, Deputy General Manager of the Colombo Water Supply Service Project Eng. Abdul Rasheed said.

He also added that the project funded by the Asian Development Bank will ensure that 60 per cent of all pipes in Colombo are replaced.

Amal Perera’s son Nadeemal and prison officer deported to SL from Dubai

Singer Amal Perera’s son Nadeemal Perera and a prison officer  who were arrested in Dubai with drug kingpin Makandure Madush, have been deported to Sri Lanka yesterday, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekera said.

He said that Nadeemal Perera (24) and prison officer K. Lalith Kumara (52) were detained by the CID and the PNB at the Katunayake airport on their arrival.

They arrived at the country on FlyDubai flight FZ 547 this morning.

Italy school bus set ablaze with 51 children

Senegalese man abducted 51 children when he hijacked an Italian school bus and set the vehicle alight in a protest over migrant deaths in the Mediterranean.

Ousseynou Sy, originally Senegalese but with Italian citizenship, stopped the bus he was driving, with two classes of high school students on board. 

He was said to have ordered the children's hands to be bound and threatened to kill them and himself during the drive, before setting the vehicle on fire when he was stopped by a police blockade today.

Ministers using cocaine: Ranjan undertook a govt. contract - Gammanpila

While claiming that State Minister Ranjan Ramanayake’s recent remarks on cocaine being used by several ministers, were baseless, Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) Leader Udaya Gammanpila said it was a contract given by the Government to the State Minister.

Addressing a news briefing yesterday, he said it was done with the motive of diverting the attention of the people and preventing authorities from attending to their respective work.
